Bowers Brings Momentum into AMSOIL Arenacross’ First Visit to Greensboro Since 2009

Zach Ames and Tony Archer Sit Atop Championship Standings

AURORA, Ill. (January 20, 2014) – With three incredible rounds of action completed, the 2014 season of AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, returns to Greensboro, N.C., and the Greensboro Coliseum this Saturday, January 25. This marks the first race from Greensboro in four seasons.

The first one-night round of the year this past weekend featured Tyler Bowers’ return to the top of the podium. The Kentucky native and three-time defending Arenacross Class Champion piloted his Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki presented by Maxxis machine to a sweep of the Main Events in Louisville for his second overall victory of the season.

Bowers’ triumphant effort came on a night when each of his closest championship rivals experienced misfortune. Both Babbitt’s Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki’s Zach Ames and Motosport.com/MJM Express/Spinechillers Racing Kawasaki’s Michael McDade endured instances of hard luck in one of the night’s two Main Events. Bowers dominated the first Main Event and overcame an inversion of the entire 16-rider field to emerge victorious. McDade finished seventh overall (12-4), while Ames finished ninth (5-13).

The result was a 15-point swing in Bowers’ favor on McDade and a 17-point swing over Ames that moved Bowers past McDade in the Arenacross Class standings and into second, just three points behind Ames.

The momentum Bowers gained from his victory combined with the misfortune experienced by both Ames and McDade will make for an intriguing storyline heading into Greensboro. This trio has established itself as the most formidable group in the Arenacross Class this season, but each has faced adversity in what has become a tremendously competitive AMSOIL Arenacross season to this point. Motosport.com/MJM Express/Spinechillers Racing KTM’s Willy Browning, who currently sits fourth in points, has risen to the occasion as well and secured a season-best second-place overall finish in Louisville to move within 24 points of the lead.

Contributing to the level of competition have been young up-and-coming riders in the Road to Supercross program. Riders like Aaron Plessinger, Jacob Hayes, Keith Tucker, and Darien Sanayei have all made their presence felt this season, highlighted by an Arenacross Class overall win by Plessinger, a Arenacross Class Main Event win and overall podium by Hayes, and a pair of Eastern Regional Arenacross Lites Class victories by Tucker. The incentive to win will be even greater this weekend for both Hayes and Tucker, who both hail from North Carolina. Hayes’ hometown of Liberty sits just a short 20-mile drive from the Greensboro Coliseum, while Tucker’s hometown of Fuquay Varina is just over an hour from Greensboro.

The Eastern Regional Arenacross Lites Class Championship has also been highly competitive through the first five nights of action. Four different winners in five races has resulted in a dramatic title fight currently led by Traders Racing Kawasaki’s Tony Archer.

Last weekend in Louisville, veteran rider Daniel Blair broke through for his first win of the season aboard his Frontier Lubricants KTM. With two wins to his credit and the hometown crowd behind him, Tucker will look to continue his impressive run while Archer will look to defend his possession of the red number plate. Meanwhile, Hayes will look to continue to show no signs of intimidation in mixing it up with the veterans of the premier Arenacross Class with the hometown crowd surely on his side as well.

Greensboro’s legendary Coliseum last hosted AMSOIL Arenacross during the 2009 season. During that night, former AMSOIL Arenacross Champion Chad Johnson captured his first win of the season in a memorable battle for victory.

Action from Greensboro begins at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday night.

The entire AMSOIL Arenacross season will air on FOX Sports 1, including re-airs on FOX Sports 2.
