Florida Mini O’s: Final Report

RIP #JG96

Brought to you by Yamaha Motor Canada

Day 5 of the 2012 Florida Mini O’s was a wash due to the struggles with internet at the track, (even the live timing was down) plus the crash that required young Jantz Grodziki to be airlifted to the hospital. After I heard about the devastating news of this young racer I lost my excitement to write a report. Also, the way that social networking turned this tragic story into a five-phone-calls-later type conversation was truly sad. People and their opinions without knowing the facts gets way out of hand in these types of situations in today’s world. As I write this Jantz’s Father sent this out: “Though there was a temporary, small glimpse of hope after some slight brain activity while connected to life support, Chris Grodzicki, Jantz’s father, made this sad announcement late Saturday night November 24th: “Unfortunately Jantz’ injuries are too severe to survive. He suffered a severed spinal cord at the base of his skull and it is improbable that he can recover. The body can not survive with this damage. The family will take him off life support in the next day or so. Godspeed #96!”
This is the second time I have been to one of these big US amateur nationals (the other being in 2006 at Lake Whitney), and it’s the second time a young rider died from a crash . There are no words that can help this tragic circumstance. All the prayers, good thoughts and positive vibes will not bring these people back to their families. I can’t even put myself in the shoes of the parents because I couldn’t even imagine how tough this must be. So many of us will say that they died doing something they love, which is a good thing. I suppose I can go with that but I find it hard to fathom that the sport, which has brought so many people so many beautiful moments in their lives, in a slit moment can take the most important thing away from others which is life itself. It’s scary to think about.  Our deepest condolences to the Grodziki family. Godspeed Jantz

Here’s the final Florida Mini O’s report of our Canadian contingent.

Cameron Lakie from Queensville, Ontario had a rough week. He was never able to make any of his main events in the motocross section of the Florida Mini O’s. However in Supercross he grabbed 22nd in 250 C stock and 12th in Open C stock.

Yorkton, Saskatchewan racer Kennedy Lutz rode really well all week long. Her best finishes were 4th in Girls 12-15 Sx, and 5th in moto in the same class.

Beau Pollock and his crew enjoyed every minute of the Mini O’s experience. He managed a 28th in 65 7-9 Mod on the Supercross track.

Giver Racing’s Mitch Goheen struggled with bike issues all week long. His best result came in Supercross in 250 C Mod where he finished 15th

Trever Gervais #56 had the best moment of any Canadian all week long. He holeshot his qualifier and led for half a lap. In the same moto, three laps later, he would crash in a pile up and not make the main event. His best result was in Supercross where he grabbed 20th in 250 C stock.

Shawn Mcelrath was fun to watch this week. This kid came out of nowhere at Loretta’s this summer and continues to shine in the A class. He would take home two titles this week.

I just loved watching Cooper Webb ride. The kid was so aggressive and smooth. He took home six A class titles and proved he is the top US amateur as we head into 2013.

Innisfil, Ontario’s Taylor Ciampichini did not have the week he was hoping for. Broken four-stroke in SX practice, which left him with the trusty two banger for the rest of the week. His best result came from Supercross in the Open B Stock class with a 17th.

Tanner Ward helped keep the Canadians on the map as far as results go. His best was an 8th in 12-13 85 Stock class. I really like this kid. Super polite, thankful, has that US aggressive style, but missing a little experience and speed. Keep an eye out for this kid in the future. I can see him making some waves in the Canadian/US moto scene.

These two kids were so fun to watch in the 85 class. On the left is Enzo Lopes, and to the right is Austin Forkner (Monster Cup Winner). These are the kids Tanner Ward races against that are crazy aggressive and super fast. I could sit and watch these kids rip there 85s all day long.

I spotted this rider with the set up for a paralyzed racer. I have seen this before on Doug Henry and Ricky James. For the new age kid that complains to daddy about his bike bogging, or his used tire, or his dirty gear, try being Darius Glover, who obviously does not have the use of his legs. When you watch this guy ride, witness the grin from ear to ear because he is still able to do what he loves. Then see if your issues are really issues. Now that’s all heart!!!

No time for smoke breaks when you’re a Gatorback track worker. There is always a little 50 rider that needs a hand. The track crew was there at every moment to lend a hand when needed.

Jacob Kolman is the son of former racer Jim Kolman from Eastern Ontario. Both Jim and Jacob made the long trip down to the Florida Mini O’s in search of some family fun together. His results were not the bets but now he has some awesome stories to share with all his friends at school after being part of one of the biggest races in the world.

Thomas Rendall is from Ottawa, Ontario. He and his dad Reece traveled with the Kolman family. Thomas was part of the Canadian crew that didn’t have the good week they were looking for. Thomas never let that get him down and was always smiling when I saw him.

Nate Hussin skies the huge downhill after the start at Gatorback. He rode well all week but the long schedule did not play into his favour. He was always at the bottom of the list with many days sitting around waiting to ride. He still managed a best result of 25th in Schoolboy 12-15 Mod and Open C Mod.

Adam Burk (seen here), along with his sister Sami Burke made the long drive down. Adam never made any of his main events, while Sami could only muster a 36th in Woman’s 12+.

Zak Simmons from Ontario had the throttled pinned all week but just couldn’t slip into a main event. His Canadian travel crew that came for the ride was just loving the new adventure to Gatorback.

Hunter Scott seems to be one of these Canadians that rides good in Canada , but then is super intimidated down in the US. That’s what dad thinks anyway. I think it’s cause this kid is way too smart to be a racer. Fast motocross riders have to be a little dumb to make it in this sport, at least that’s my theory. He thinks and over analyzes the sport way too much. Sometimes you have to just grab throttle without thinking to move forward.

The younger Scott in the family had a pretty solid week after just coming off a broken arm. Tanner is the exact opposite from Hunter. Not a care in the world, other than Eggo’s, mad skills, toy dirtbikes, and the movie Elf. He managed a 12th on the motocross track in the 4-6 51cc class.

Now for the five Canuacks that i didn’t get a picture of. Since I was racing as well and not just taking pics it was hard for me to get everyone. Here are the results from the racers I missed this week at the 2012 Gatorback Florida Mini O’s:

Hopefully I didn’t miss anybody else. Great to see so many Canucks make the trek down and give it a shot. Good luck to you all in 2013.

Big thanks to Yamaha Motor Canada for all their support helping us get to Mini O’s.
