Another week has gone by and no end to winter in sight. I figured I should do some spring cleaning while it’s still too cold to go outside haha! Preston’s a little hoarder so I have to do it while he’s at school. Out with the clothes that are too small, random rocks, pieces of paper, and every other nic-nac that gets hidden in his closet. Justin also got the 10 plaques he earned at arenacross up on the wall. There’s no more room at the moment for trophies or plaques in his room so they have now started going on the hallway wall. They’re starting to take over the house!
With winter coming to an end (hopefully) and race season upon us, a lot of motocross friends are heading down south for spring training. We don’t typically do this, however we might head down for a long weekend over March break. We’re lucky that Chesterman’s indoor track in Tillsonburg is so close. He’s been riding there at least once per week since the end of the season. With the practice and arenacross races, we hope that he will transition back to the outdoor tracks with no problem. Our main priority for Preston is that he just stays on the bike. The practice, MX schools and races at Chesterman’s have given him lots of exercise and the time he needs on the bike.
How do you keep your kids active when it’s too cold to go outside? It’s hard for us especially when our kids hate the cold. Preston likes to ‘work out’ so we try to do that on a regular basis. Easy exercises such as sit ups, push-ups, balancing while throwing a ball back and forth with Dad, running up and down the stairs…you get the idea. We think it’s so much fun and we get tired just watching him. We also try to travel to the indoor BMX parks as much as possible. Inflow in Dundas isn’t too far from us and they have a kids’ night on Tuesdays. Also this weekend we decided to make the drive to Joyride 150 in Markham. I can’t believe that was our first time; Preston rode for five hours straight. The facility is fantastic, great for any level of rider. Preston loved all the jumps and their foam pit. It’s much more fun when exercise involves doing something they love. We will definitely be making the trip back there in the next week or two.
Although exercise throughout the winter months is important, so is eating properly and sleeping. Preston has a hard time with both. He loves to eat healthy and will choose apples over donuts any day, but he just doesn’t eat enough or at regular times. Most days his lunch box comes home full and he’s starving. He’s a very lazy eater and that’s definitely something we need to work on as race season is coming up. Race days are actually worse than most; he gets nervous and can’t eat. We’re lucky if we get a banana and a yogurt into him before he’s on the line. Sleeping is the other biggie. Neither of my kids like to sleep. Every night is a battle. Preston doesn’t understand that in order to be in top form for race days you have to sleep well all week, not just the night before. I’m sure these are problems many moms deal with.
Good luck to everyone heading south in the next week or two. Stay safe whether you are going down to race or just practice. From a mom, take it easy those first few laps! Haha. We’ll be attending the last race at Chesterman’s on Saturday. Have a great week. Thanks again who continue reading. Hopefully I will have more exciting things to talk about soon!
