Dave Gowland Reports on Cole Thompson

dave g1I think after two rounds Cole sits pretty much where we thought he would. However, we think he can do better. When you factor in the first round nerves in Dallas and the bad start he got in Atlanta, he needs to keep the ball rolling this weekend. Right now I think the biggest thing he’s dealing with is the first few laps of the main and just how aggressive the top guys are. The first 10 laps are intense and Cole has to adjust to that.

Cole is a rider that likes to ride in his comfort zone, and that is great but the riders that win are the ones that figure out how to ride out of their comfort zone. It’s a process though and Cole is right where we thought he’d be. Each week he’s building his confidence, which is going to allow him to run near the front. At this level it’s not just about going out and racing, it’s about dealing with everything throughout the day and then still going out and performing.

During the week Cole is at the test track riding with guys like Roczen, Dungey, Tedesco and Anderson, so everyday he’s riding at the highest level possible. Cole is adjusting very well to this, and as this series goes on we hope he’ll get better and better. I think by the time he gets to Nanaimo for round one of the Rockstar Energy Drink MX Nationals, you’re going to see a different Cole Thompson. He’s a great kid and if he keeps doing what he’s doing right now, he has a really bright future ahead of him.
